Market Factors and TrendsThe aftermarket industry has conditioned consumers to expect and demand Original Equipment (OE) equivalent replacement parts. There is a value-added perception and consumer confidence with OE equivalent products.

DIY customers want OE-equivalent assemblies for ease of installation. Professional mechanics want OE-equivalent assemblies for faster, more profitable, trouble-free installations. "Custom-fit" assemblies will not satisfy customers or application demands.

OE assemblies are becoming more vehicle and application specific, allowing fewer opportunities for consolidation or alteration.

Smaller engine compartments, increased accessory systems and higher under-the-hood operating temperatures prohibit re-routing or modification of hose assemblies without sacrificing safety and service life.

Complex assembly designs, tube angles, bends, end fittings, mounting connections, brackets, grommets, sheathing, sensor ports, molded return-lines and higher operating pressures demand that aftermarket products duplicate the original OE design, configuration and function.

Close OEM RelationshipsEdelmann engineers work closely with the OEM to design and build power steering products to SAE and OE specifications. Technologies and tooling developed by this relationship carry over into the aftermarket.

Engineering & ManufacturingEdelmann is the only aftermarket power steering supplier that manufactures both hose and fittings, which results in superior product quality control.

The same top-quality power steering hose assemblies used by automotive manufacturers are available to the aftermarket from Edelmann.

Assemblies also come with brackets for correct alignment and stable installation. Heat shields and convoluted sheathing provide protection from hostile environments.

High Pressure HoseEdelmann power steering assemblies include high pressure hose where specified by OEM's. Covers are highly resistant to oil, heat and ozone which cause ordinary assemblies to fail prematurely. Tube construction withstands internal oil temperatures of up to 300 degrees F.

Double piles of high-tensile strength braided fabric help Edelmann pressure and cylinder line hose to withstand pulsation pressures up to 1,500 psi and bursting pressures up to 8,900 psi.

Low pressure return lines are also available from Edelmann with nitrile tube and oil-resistant synthetic rubber covers and factory-installed, pre-bent end fittings. For late model vehicles, Edelmann offers a special chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) tube with a temperature capacity of up to 300 degrees F.

Premium FittingsEdelmann tubing is Pro-coated or terne coated; couplings and fittings are zinc-chromate plated for rust and corrosion protection.

Our factory-crimped process eliminates the tendency for the hose to roll or twist within the crimped coupling. The couplings are pressure-bonded to the hose; crimping pressure is equally distributed around the hose circumference.

Edelmann uniform crimping process ensures a long-lasting connection; ferrule ends are flared to prevent pinching or cutting the hose under tight-bend conditions. Tapered crimp design relieves stress and eliminates tube fatigue.

Edelmann part numbers are ink-jetted onto the metal ferrules for easy, positive identification.

Construction FeaturesEdelmann uses mounting brackets to ensure a perfectly aligned, stable installation. If the OE utilizes a non-reusable feature, Edelmann duplicates that feature on its aftermarket product. Heat shields and convoluted sheathing designed to protect the hose are additional examples of Edelmann commitment to quality.

Exclusive Stake-Nut DesignEdelmann continues to be a problem solver. Ford Motor Company designed a snap-ring retained male fitting which worked well on the production line, but proved to be a problem area for the mechanic in the replacement market. Installers frequently over-torqued the fitting, causing it to rupture. Tightening the fitting beyond the recommended setting collapsed the snap ring and caused the tube to blow out of the threaded fitting.

Other aftermarket manufacturers duplicated Ford's design, and in doing so, re-created the same failure problem.

Edelmann designed the positive-stop stake-nut fitting to eliminate rupture due to over-torque. This unique design is exclusive to Edelmann power steering assemblies.

Product Application ResearchThe Edelmann Product Application team continuously researches OE power steering installations to ensure the most accurate and current data in the industry.

Part numbers are researched on the vehicle and in OE parts listings to verify application scope and range. Application consolidations are considered wherever possible in an effort to properly manage line growth, but only when a "no compromise" fit may be achieved. While Edelmann wants to maximize application opportunities per assembly, no compromises are made in fit, form or function.

Uniform PackagingEdelmann power steering assemblies are boxed in a heavy-gauge, 200-pound test corrugated carton that provides a rigid "footprint" for strength and shipping protection. Edelmann packaging is the strongest and easiest-to-access box in the aftermarket.

A total of 70 percent of our line is in a nine-inch tall carton for uniformity and more efficient use of shelving space. The remaining 30 percent of the line (due to plane and tangent arrangements) is packaged in larger-sized cartons or optional resealable poly bags. The oversize cartons are restricted to seven different sizes, again for uniformity. The larger-sized cartons are part number designated to appear at the end of the product line to allow for overhead or bulk storage.

Edelmann part numbers are oriented vertically and horizontally for "user friendliness" on the shelf. This orientation makes it easier to stock and locate Edelmann power steering assemblies. Installation instructions are on every box to assist the DIY or professional installer.

Superior CatalogingEdelmann power steering catalog is a complete publication offering pressure hose, cylinder lines, return line assemblies and pump repair kits, manufacturers' part number interchange, competitive products interchange and product illustrations arranged by part number sequence.

A brief explanation of power steering systems, illustrations of typical pumps, steering gears and system designs enables the counterperson to positively identify proper system components and the necessary replacement part.

The complete Edelmann power steering catalog is produced annually to increase accuracy, reduce confusion and allow more efficient "look-up" times at the counter.

Features of Edelmann OEM-Style Power Steering Hose

  1. PSsuperhoseHigh Pressure Hose ConstructionHigh pressure hose is a more advanced, higher performance hose.
    CPE Return Line Construction
CPE is an abbreviation for chlorinated polyethylene, a higher specification return hose. Edelmann uses CPE return hose as found on OE.
  2. Pro-Coated or Zinc Plated Tube EndsEdelmann hoses have pro-coated or zinc plated tubing ends. These processes of coating ensure a long-lasting product that is resistant to rust and corrosion.
  3. Double-Bead Lock CrimpsUnlike some of our competitors, Edelmann uses a double-bead lock crimp design. Although double-bead lock beading is a more expensive procedure, it prevents leakage due to its solid tube-to-shell connection.
  4. Mounting BracketsEdelmann hoses are supplied with moveable mounting brackets to aid in hose installation. Brackets are designed in accordance with those found on OE hoses. By using moveable brackets, the installer can compensate for "real world" under-the-hood conditions.
  5. Heat and Abrasion GuardsFlexible, high-temperature guards are used to protect the hose cover from engine hot spots. It also serves to protect the hose from contact with other under-the-hood parts, stones or other road debris.
  6. High-Temperature Silver Heat GuardsThis special high-temperature guard is used to protect the hose cover on late-model vehicles where the OE hose passes close to, or actually touches the exhaust system. For applications where the OE hose specifies a high-temperature heat guard, Edelmann has also.
  7. Fluid RestrictorsTo ensure a quietly functioning power steering system, some OE hoses have "built-in" restrictors. The restrictor constricts fluid movement, thus lowering noise levels. As found on OE, Edelmann incorporates this feature also. These restrictors are found on both pressure and return hoses.
  8. Swithch SocketsOE manufacturers incorporate switches into the power steering pressure hose. These switches serve to either speed-up the engine idle or cut-off a compressor. Following the design of the OE manufacturers, Edelmann hoses use this switch socket.
  9. Banjo-End Lock TabsMany late-model import vehicles that use banjo-end fittings are equipped with "lock tabs." These tabs are designed to limit the possibility of the hose end from loosening due to engine vibration and twist. Edelmann hoses incorporate lock tabs as found on OE
  10. Original-Style FittingsEdelmann couplings and fittings are manufactured with heavy-gauge metal and are zinc-dichromate plated to resist corrosion for a longer service life and a high-quality appearance.
